“Happiness struck the head”, or What if you succeed and now the company is in crisis?

Last week, in the first part of this conversation, I said that a hangover and insanity are practically no different. Outwardly, they are very similar. It may even seem that insanity is a protracted hangover. But this is not entirely correct, there is still a difference: insanity, no matter how strange it may sound, the process is controlled. It is not normal from the point of view of reality, but inside the company, slowly plunging into madness, everything looks very harmonious. The company controls the direction of movement.

In the case of a hangover, this is not so.

If you ever happen to work with someone who makes a strange impression, try to see if there is any difference. And to make it clearer, I’ll give an example of a case of a company that has successfully overcome the “dizziness of success”.

You, of course, remember that when there was the first jump in the dollar, it was a shock to everyone. The growth or fall of foreign currency in itself is not such a terrible thing, but in the case when a country does not produce anything and buys abroad, or if it produces, from imported components, raw materials, materials, a growth in the foreign exchange rate can cause economic crisis.

But, as the saying goes, “To whom is war, and to whom is mother dear.” Not for everyone, this leap was a disaster and grief. One of these “winners” was a Russian textile holding, which slowly and with a scratch was producing various fabrics of non-competitive quality on Soviet equipment.

That is, while bringing from China, Turkey and some India was cheaper than “supporting the domestic producer”, these products were uncompetitive, but as soon as the exchange rate increased, at that very moment our native textile holding turned out to be “the most enviable bachelor in the town”.

Naturally, caravans of buyers were immediately lined up behind the gates, so that their production would not stop and die, they were ready to pay (to a certain extent) any money.

And here it is important to understand that when you are inside the company, there is a chance to lose your head. When you suddenly find yourself in the center of global attention after many years of living, when you no longer have enough pockets to make money, it may seem that it will always be like this.

There is a pretty sad joke about Texas. You probably saw how Americans decorate the bumpers of their cars with various inscriptions. So, the most popular inscriptions in Texas (which is one of the largest suppliers of oil and gas in the world) is: “Lord, send me another oil boom. This time I definitely won’t miss him ”(in the original, the last word sounds a little rude). This joke shows well how the hangover and insanity differ.

Where is the watershed? The main property of a “hangover” is an accident. External circumstances have developed so that you are accidentally thrown on the crest of this wave. The company itself is not able to construct this success and repeat it, it does not have the technology for this, there is no strategy, there is no way. And important! There is no specialist within the company who can see and understand what is the true reason for success, evaluate the company’s ability to take advantage of the chance and put it into circulation.
