How to hire an accountant if you do not understand anything in accounting
I clearly remember my first leader. In the early 2000s, right after the institute, I got a job as the chief (and only) accountant in a small furniture company. From the conversation with the boss, I learned two things:
There should be several directions in business, because if difficulties are in one industry, others will certainly help to survive. Specifically, he had: agriculture, a water and beer company and a company selling furniture.
The manager should be at least a little understanding of accounting. I recall how he went into his office, poured a large mug of coffee and opened an accounting program. There he looked at only four documents, and this was enough for him to understand the state of affairs in the company:
“Turnover” on account 60 (Suppliers and contractors). Thus, he understood how much we owed;
“Turnover” on account 62 (Buyers and customers). So he understood how much they owed us;
“Turnover” in cash accounts 50 (Cashier) and 51 (Bank). This is information about how much money the company has.
Here is a simple analysis that gave my leader an idea of the state of affairs in his company. According to its results, the boss gave orders on when and how much to transfer to suppliers, on the issuance of loans to other companies, on the expenditure of funds for other purposes.
And, of course, he was completely indifferent to how we draw up balances and other reports. By the way, we then carried the reports to the tax office on paper, they were dusted in huge stacks to the ceiling in myriad tax vaults. I think that I will not surprise anyone if I say that in the tax we had certain acquaintances who helped with reports and other interesting issues.
Almost 20 years have passed since then – and a lot has changed.
The burden on the business has increased significantly. Just think: over the past two years we have been added three (!) New reports:
quarterly “monster” 6-personal income tax.
I’m not talking about the constant change of existing reports and their formats.
With the advent of electronic document management in reporting, the online tax system reconciles, sets requirements for the payment of arrears and fines. Tax has gained access to your bank accounts. She analyzes the income, compares it with those that you stated in the statements. In case of discrepancy – the same requirements, penalties, fines.

There are reasons to block your account. This, ultimately, can temporarily paralyze the company. And, as a result – the failure of contracts, lost profits. Not to mention the situation when currency, alcohol, import, export are involved in your business. This requires separate analysis, accounting and reporting.
What about the online box office? Well, you get the point …
And in the future, control over accounting by departments and penalties for errors will only increase.
In view of the above, the question of competent accounting before the head arose quite acutely.

An irreplaceable assistant in the management of accounting has always been an accountant. If the turnover of your activity is low and you have a specialist whom you trust, then this would be an ideal option. If you do not plan to create a full-fledged accounting department and the accountant will be the only one, then at the reception (in addition to the main function), we advise you to discuss the following points with him:
Now the function of an accountant is not limited to accounting and tax accounting. If the company has employees, it is necessary to maintain personnel records. For violation in this area will be fined in the amount of 5 to 50 thousand rubles.
If the company has foreign employees, then knowledge of migration accounting is mandatory. Penalties in this area can be up to six zeros.
The accountant must be “savvy” in communication with the tax and funds. Since a company representative can be called to the payroll tax commission, income legalization commission and the like. When submitting reports, requirements for submission of explanations may come (even if the reports are filled out correctly). They must be answered in writing and must be answered within 5 business days.
Possession of management accounting skills. I can not say that knowledge of management accounting is the main function of an accountant. Rather, it is the prerogative of the CFO. But if it is not, then find out if the accountant will be able to prepare management accounting data for you. This is a data set that allows the manager to analyze the current state of affairs in the company in order to increase profits. And if an accountant can prepare them for you, then this will be an undoubted “plus”.
However, I cannot but say about the “minuses” of the accountant employee:
like all of us, he is a living person who is not immune from mistakes. Whereas in this area errors in most cases end in fines;
